As avid fans of her podcast, Michelle Obama has long been a key source of inspiration for me and many of my friends and family. Although best known for her role as the first black US First Lady, this inspirational woman was making waves long before she entered the political limelight.
Born and raised in Chicago, she was always a hard worker and eventually attended first Princeton and later Harvard Law School. In 1989 she began work in a law firm, where she met Barack Obama, but quickly moved on to work in public service.
Throughout Barack’s presidential campaign in 2008, she took leave from her job at the University of Chicago in order to fully dedicate herself to his campaign, giving countless speeches and interviews whilst still making time to care for her two young daughters.
"I will not run for president. No, nope, not going to do it."
Having been passionate about various social issues throughout her whole life, Barack’s presidency gave her activism an international platform and she immediately got to work on several initiatives. Her most notable work includes encouraging better education for girls, equal rights, healthy living and better social welfare.
Since leaving the White House she has published a bestselling book, accompanied by an Oscar-winning Netflix documentary, as well as (of course) a podcast. As an immensely popular, well-known and active public figure, she continues to advocate for many different social issues, inspiring young women and people of colour all over the world.
