With over 90 million records sold worldwide, Pink is one of the world's best selling music artists. Her impressive discography has already earned her legendary status, but her legacy extends far further than just a higher-than-average number of chart toppers.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1979 as Alecia Moore, Pink had a difficult upbringing. Her parents divorced by the time she was 10 and within a couple of years she had begun regularly using drugs, performing in clubs and running away. She was bounced between various relatives' homes before joining the girl group Choice at the age of 16. The band wasn't particularly successful, but acted as a launchpad for her solo career, which she began in 1995.
Pink's first solo album sounded fairly similar to most of the other blonde, cookie-cutter pop stars of the early 2000s, but she was determined to take control of her career so hired a new manager and started writing her own songs. Her next album, M!ssundaztood, was harder, edgier and more emotionally intense, with songs about her rough childhood and family problems. The album created shockwaves within the music industry as it was the first time in a while that a woman had produced an album with anger as the primary emotion.
“I write from my life, my experience. I’m selfish that way.”
Since then, Pink has won multiple awards for her music, including a Grammy in 2004 for the best female rock vocal performance. She's produced multiple internationally chart-topping songs and has smashed through gender stereotypes within the music industry. Her gritty take-no-prisoners attitude, androgynous look, Cirque-du-Soleil level performances and consistent messages of embracing your inner freak have set her apart from her contemporaries. In addition to this, she is an outspoken activist for animal rights, challenging gender roles, LGBTQ+ rights, femininity and beauty standards, as well as UNICEF (to name a few).
After over 20 years of chart-topping music, Pink has taken a step back to focus on her family, but through her charity work and activism she continues to act as an inspiration to young people all over the world.
