The Slow Fashion Revolution

We've all been there - bought an outfit online because we liked it on the model, worn it to one party and then never again, but told ourselves that it doesn't matter too much - it was free delivery after all. With new clothes so cheap and readily available it can be hard not to fall into the trap of boredom buying, or purchasing something to use for a single event. This tendency is called fast fashion, and it embodies everything that the Crochet Collective stands against.

However, in recent years a new idea has begun to grow within the fashion industry: Slow Fashion. It's everything that fast fashion isn't - it doesn't arrive the next day free delivery, it doesn't cost a fiver, and it may not even be brand new. But it will last you many wears, it will cut your carbon emissions dramatically, and it is much more unique. A smaller wardrobe filled with clothes that you love and that will last you, is surely so much better. And in the long run this will be less costly to the environment, to workers in bad conditions and to your own wallet.

We at The Crochet Collective are trying to embody this as much as possible: when you make an order you'll be contacted directly by the member of our team making your garment - this way they can make sure that what they are making will be exactly what you want and need. The tops are made precisely to your measurements over hours of podcasts/TV shows/deep chats, making each top totally unique to you. Although the electricity required to make the chocolate that fuels us is probably substantial, the tops are entirely handmade with no technological input, and this focus on quality means they will last you many wears.

Here are a few of our favourite ways to embrace slow fashion and help the world and your own style:

  • Shop at charity shops - not only is this a cheaper option, your money is going to a good cause

  • Depop, ebay and facebook marketplace. These are also great options as a way to recycle your own old clothes

  • Clothes swaps - if you can't find any then organise them with your friends!

  • Buying quality products from sustainable brands such as the Crochet Collective (we'll be sharing some of our other favs on our Instagram)

  • Have a go at making your own clothes or upcycling ones you don't wear anymore
