When I was looking for new crochet patterns, I found a paper by the American Counseling Association that outlines some of the health benefits that a regular crocheter can experience. And as someone with a strong appreciation for the scientific method, I thought some of these would be worth sharing.
1. Stress aleviation, depression relief and anxiety reduction
The repetitive nature of the craft has been shown to release serotonin, a natural anti-depressant. Counting stitches serves as a productive outlet for people with anxiety associated with OCD and multiple studies have also found that keeping your mind focused and hands busy can bring you into a calmer headspace.
2. Reduces and postpones dementia
Crocheting is a neuroprotective practice and may reduce dementia by as much as 50%.
3. Insomnia Treatment
A study by Stitchlinks, a UK organisation that researches the benefits of yarncrafts, found that 100% of insomnia patients reported improved sleep with 90% being able to eliminate medication in a program that included knitting.crocheting is a neuroprotective practice and may reduce dementia by as much as 50%.
