Crochet vs Knitting (a family debate)

I come from a family of needlecrafters - I've been a proud wearer of homemade jumpers from various relatives for most of my life - Weasley style as I like to think of it. However, I chose to break the mould (slightly) and take up crochet instead of the traditional knitting, something that has led to a (fairly minor) domestic drama.

As my family sat watching various pointless shows during the first lockdown last year, I returned to crochet after a few years off and churned out tops, bags, scarves, cardigans, and then went on to start a business around my hobby with my friends, crocheting more than ever before. And that entire time, my mum has been knitting the same jumper... Admittedly it is a relatively large and very nice jumper, but it is just one jumper (that she has yet to finish).

I faced comments about my crochet being 'flimsy' and 'not as sturdy as knitting' and my projects being too small, until I made my mum a cardigan for her birthday this year which was quite a labour of love but definitely put down all those insults. As of the summer, she has concluded 'I don't know why I don't just switch to crochet at this stage,' something that I wholeheartedly agree with as crochet is evidently the superior craft :)

My brief google search and extensive character analysis categorised our personalities:

Me (a crochet enthusiast)

  • More creative

  • Unafraid of making mistakes

  • Super speedy

My mother (a hardcore knitter)

  • Patient

  • Slow and methodical

  • More economical (the only concrete thing going for knitting is that apparently it requires less yarn)

I'm banking on the fact that she hasn't yet worked out how to read this blog...
